Conclusion

Guidance Notes:

Standard Operating Procedure in the Department dictates that your Case Notes must be compiled in a standard format, prior to being written-up for presentation to your instructor.

The following specifies the sections that must be completed if the conditions of the standard format are to be satisfied.

Please note: your Report can be submitted in one of two ways:

1. On-line using the supplied Online Report Form.

2. In person using the blank Report Form.

Standard Format

1. Introduction

Your Report must have an Introduction that includes some or all of the following information.

a. A statement of the problem you have been asked to consider and solve.

b. An outline of the basic facts of the case.

c. An indication of your main suspects and the theories you investigated relating to their involvement.

2. Discussion of Evidence.

The main body of your Report will focus on a clear, well-organised, examination and assessment of:

a. The basic facts of the case.

b. The involvement of your suspects, with the emphasis on establishing their guilt or innocence through a thorough examination and assessment of relevant theories, witnesses and evidence.

Each of your suspects should be examined in turn and conclusions drawn about the extent and nature of their involvement in the case.

3. Conclusions and Recommendations

It is vitally important that clear conclusions are drawn from the evidence you have collected, since a decision about further action against each suspect will be based entirely on the conclusions you have drawn. It is advisable, therefore, that your conclusions briefly specify:

a. The suspect(s), theories and evidence you rejected as being unconvincing as an explanation for the case. If necessary, you need to clearly state why you have rejected these suspects.

b. The suspect(s), theories and evidence you have accepted as being the key to understanding the case. You will need to justify your conclusion by reference to the evidence collected since an application for an arrest warrant will be based entirely on your recommendation...
