Cultural Identity
Where do I begin to define myself culturally?

As you might expect, being a Sociologist (albeit one that is, after all, shamelessly up for sale) I support a "sleeping giant" (translation: totally hopeless) football team (Sheffield Wednesday, since you ask - there's not even the consolation of saying they're better than the other Sheffield "team"). This, however, is my father's fault - I am the living embodiment of parental socialisation (although, having said that, one of my brothers supports Arsenal which, in the normal course of events would be his problem. Except, of course, they're good).

Musically, punk was, is and ever more shall be my defining musical  genre (Clash, Buzzcocks, Members, X-Ray Specs...) but I'm also partial to a bit of 60's time-warp stuff (Lovin' Spoonful, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors...any old hippy-dippy stuff really). The 1980's saw New Romanticism (not mainstream of course - B-Movie, Heaven 17...), a brief (if entirely accidental) flirtation with Goth (Bauhaus, Psychedelic Furs, Joy Division...), through New Order to Nirvana and then - well not much actually.

Sport's wise I play a little cricket (well a lot actually). I play for a club who's 1st XI won the Premier League two seasons ago (unfortunately I was captaining the Saturday 3rd team at the time).

Oh yeah. I'm happily married (at least I assume it's happily - you can't always tell can you? One minute you're sitting at home with your feet up in front of the TV watching re-runs of the latest Premiership repeats without a care in the world and the next your wife is talking about trading you in for a younger, leaner, fitter model with more hair and all his own teeth. She's probably joking but, believe me, it's a wake-up call).

In terms of pets, I've got a load of fish in a pond at the bottom of the garden. They're easy to keep, tend not to annoy the neighbours and, best of all, they're a fascinating conversation piece at parties. It would be sad to leave them behind when I'm offered a lucrative new job somewhere exotic in the North of England, but luckily the herons that occasionally visit the garden will polish them off in no time at all).

Media-wise (other than music of course) the films I tend to go for are mainly ridiculous escapist nonsense (anything by BruceSwarzeneggerSeagalWillis etc.), although one of my favourite films is Chabrol's "NADA". I quite like Woody Allen and have been known to watch Jim Carey (but only those films where he pulls ridiculous faces and speaks in a funny voice - just about all of them, basically). TV consists mainly of Football, films, football, Survivor and Big Brother (Quality TV!).

This, then, is my cultural id.

But wait. What light at yonder window breaks? Could it be? There is more?

(Note to myself for editing: Make-up some cultural pursuits that make me look more intelligent).
