Help with Downloading

Documents

These are available for download in two formats and two ways:
Format 1: Word

This file has a .doc extension and will load into any Microsoft Word compatible word processor. The Version No. used (for example Word 6 or Word 2000) tells you which version of Word you will need to load the file (everyone with a Windows operating system from 95 upwards has a Word-compatible word processor on their computer - variously named WordPad or Write depending on your operating system).

Format 2: Adobe Acrobat

This file has a .pdf extension and can only be read if you have the Adobe Acrobat Reader program on your computer.

See the File Viewers section below for details on how to download the Acrobat file viewer.

Way 1: If you want to open the file immediately, left click on the file name (for example "Word 6") or file title (for example, "Crime and Deviance"). This will open the file in a New Browser Window on your computer. If you are trying to open a Word file you must have a Word compatible wordprocesser available on your computer otherwise you will not be able to open the file. Similarly, if you are trying to open an Acrobat pdf file you must have the Acrobat Reader Program available on your computer otherwise you will not be able to open the file.

Once a file is open you need to save it (in the usual way you Save files) to your computer if you want to open it off-line (when you are not connected to the Internet).

Way 2: If you do not want to open the file immediately but would rather save it directly to your computer, you can do this in the following way:

If you are using Internet Explorer: Right click on the file name, choose "Save Target As..." and follow the directions given by the program.

If you are using Netscape: Right click on the file name, choose "Save Link Target As..." and follow the directions given by the program.

PowerPoint

Occasionally PowerPoint presentation files are available to view or download (these files have the extension .ppt or .pps). The only difference between the two types of file is that the latter file will start immediately once it's run whereas the former will default to the Microsoft PowerPoint program (from where it can then, of course, be run as a slideshow).

To view or download PowerPoint files just follow the "Way 1" or "Way 2" instructions above.

Packed Files

These are a convenient way to distribute multiple files in a single download (and where .exe files are being distributed it avoids the problem of school / college firewalls rejecting any attempt to download the file). These are distributed in .zip format and to access the files once they are downloaded you will need to run them through a program such as WinZip (a version of which is available as a free download) - although most file compression / packing programs can handle such files. To download this type of file, use the "Way 1" instructions above.

File Viewers

If you do not have the appropriate software for viewing the above files (Microsoft Word for .doc files, PowerPoint for .ppt/.pps files and the Adobe Acrobat reader for .pdf files), you can download the following "viewer programs":
