Cultural products

The products of cultural endeavour in these areas are sometimes referred-to by sociologists as "cultural artifacts of meaning". This reflects the idea that a society may produce things (or "artifacts") like music, paintings, novels and so forth that have a particular meaning for the people of that society.

Such cultural artifacts of meaning are not, however, restricted to art, music and literature. Anything that a society produces will have meaning and significance for the people of that society. Even something as simple as a pair of training shoes is a cultural artifact that has meaning - think, for example, about the difference between a pair of trainers bearing the label "Tesco's" and a pair bearing the label "Nike". When you, as an individual, wear these different trainers it says something about you to others...
