The high divorce rate in our society indicates that marriage as an institution is under
threat in our society.
Martin Joseph
("Sociology For Everyone") notes that:
- 90% of people who divorce remarry,
which suggests that marriage itself is not unpopular. Rather, people have different
expectations of what marriage involves.
- In the past, divorce was not
possible for the majority of the population. People in unhappy marriages simply separated
from each other. Since they could not legally remarry, this distorted the figures for
marriage in the past.
