Refer to the same thing This is a context where definitions are significant and, although at first site this point may seem fairly obvious, it is perhaps surprising how often (in life as in sociology) things are not defined in the same way. In basic terms, how you define something will affect the way you study it. In turn, this will affect the conclusions you may want to draw from your studies. This area of debate is called sociological methodology (arguments about how it is possible to study and measure human behaviour) and it is something to which we will return at various points in the course. |
