One of the first indications of a possible "observer effect" occurred in a study carried-out by Elton Mayo in America in the 1920's. Mayo's study was intended to observe the effects of environmental changes on worker productivity and it was carried-out in the Hawthorne factory of the Western Electricity Company (hence, the "observer effect" is sometimes called the "Hawthorne Effect"). |
