N.Hart (1985)

Part of the "Themes and Developments in Sociology" series (a shorter version appears in "New Directions"), the text covers the main themes in the sociology of health (inequality, social process, social control and the like) in some depth. It's not particularly reader-friendly, in terms of style and presentation, and its main value is probably for students doing project work in this area. It is, however, neatly divided into relatively small sections that could be used as the basis of class discussion work.

P. Aggleton (1990)

Part of the "Society Now" series, this is a useful little introduction to various areas covered under the sociology of health. These include sections on defining and measuring health, an historical overview of theories of health inequalities and a brief section on health and social policy. As with all the texts in this series, clear sub-headings are used extensively to highlight major concepts and a range of activities are included to aid student comprehension.

M.Blaxter (1990)

This is a comprehensive survey of the health of the British population, "based on a survey of 9,000 individuals". Although aimed at an undergraduate audience, the book contains a wealth of empirical data relating to patterns of behaviour (smoking, alcohol, diet, etc.), relationships (class. gender, region) and "definitions of health". This type of information, although not geared towards A-level students, does provide teachers with a comprehensive survey of health-related attitudes and behaviours.
