Sociological Perspectives

This area is difficult to grasp at the best of times, since it involves mastering complex ideas about the nature of structure and action and, of course, their relationship to one another. It is also complicated because different sociologists have developed radically different takes on both the nature of the social world and the relationship between, on the one hand, social forces and, on the other, individual consciousness and actions.

At AS it's not essential to have a highly-developed knowledge of perspectives and theories - but if you can master this particular area it won't do you any harm and will, of course, help you score highly in your exams. For this reason the links in this section have been divided into two groups:

  • Introductory links provide a relatively-simple
    introduction and overview to a particular perspective.
     
  • Advanced links are for those students who want to
    stretch their understanding
