Family and Industrialisation
An interesting classroom exercise that combines historical work on
family / household life and research methods is to analyse
Census data (which can be downloaded below) to see what it tells us about
family structures in England in the mid 19th century.
The data is from one small area (Wrockwardine Wood) from one part of the
country (Shropshire) and represents a very small - but manageable - data
set for classroom use.
In addition, the use of such data gives students the opportunity to
consider key methodological concepts such as data reliability,
validity, representativeness and generalisation.
