Although similar in scope and practice to the idea of Extended schools, the basic idea behind this type of school is the ability to offer learning opportunities to the whole community in which the school exists - and not just to those children who attend the school on a daily basis. What the school actually offers the community varies from region to region; some may simply offer different kinds of adult education classes, whereas offers may operate as "supplementary schools" - St George Community College in Bristol, for example, ran "...a Somali Supplementary School on the school premises, designed to target children recently arrived in the country and at risk from underachievement and social exclusion". In September 2003, St George Community College reopened as The City Academy. |
