Defining Sociology To develop our initial thoughts and understanding of Sociology, we can add a few more definitions to those cited in the Introductory chapter, mainly to demonstrate two ideas: Firstly, that sociological study covers a relatively wide area in terms of ideas, beliefs and practices. Secondly, if we can identify some of the features common to a range of definitions it should help us to arrive at a general, overall, definition of the subject, subject matter and practice of Sociology.
