The electronic version
of AS Sociology for AQA marks a radical departure in the publishing of
textbooks in the UK, for a range of reasons:
Colour and graphics - unlike with printed
textbooks there's no premium placed on these. You get a full-colour
textbook at the fraction of the cost.
Portability: The electronic version (with optional site
licensing) can be ported across numerous machines, added to a school /
college VLE etc. at very little extra cost (with a site license it can
be as cheap as £3 per student). AS Sociology for AQA
downloads with no copy protection. We trust you to do the right thing and
play fairly with us (as in not copying the text and distributing it to
all and sundry) and, in
return, we can keep the cost to both a minimum and make enough money to
ensure updates are worthwhile.
Wear and tear: Electronic versions rarely become damaged and
unusable (and if they do, they're simple to replace - there are no
password restrictions of the download files - we trust you not to make
illegal copies...).
Flexibility: One of the big advantages of electronic
publishing is the flexibility it offers the end-user - something that
can be expressed in a couple of ways:
Firstly, with printed textbooks there are sections you may
never teach / study - but you still have to buy them. With the
electronic version of AS Sociology for AQA you can buy as many or as few
modules as you want. You can, for example, buy just those modules you
teach or study or you may want to buy a module to complement the
existing textbook you use. Modules are designed to be both cheap and flexible
enough to meet the needs of both teachers and students.
Secondly, making notes from traditional printed textbooks can be
laborious and, with something like highlighting, destructive. With
electronic versions nothing could be easier to cut-and-paste Notes,
highlight and print areas of text and so forth.
Cost: The electronic version costs around 50% less
than
equivalent printed AS textbooks (even though the latter has less depth and
detail to the text, fewer graphics and pictures and a much more limited
use of colour - 4-colour separation is starting to appear, but 2-colour
separation is still quite common).
Buy a
site licence and you start to make some serious savings
- for £60 each AS student gets their own copy of a
course textbook!
Updates: When a book's printed it's contents are fixed
- it's costly to add updated text or new features (because it requires a
complete resetting). Electronic versions have no such restrictions -
updated material can be added quickly and easily (in the same way that
updated versions of software can be produced). Once you purchase the
electronic version you become eligible for version updates (should you
want them) for the lifetime of that version.
Support: AS Sociology for AQA (2nd edition) is the
only textbook you can buy and be guaranteed
access to and support from the author if and
when you need it. If you have a question, problem or simply want to pass
the time of day you can email
Chris.Livesey and be certain of getting an answer (how many other
authors can you say that about?).
